The partition has always been an intriguing topic that continues to inspire debate and discussion. Every time there is an altercation with our neighboring country Pakistan, the news channels would get into some discussion that would somehow center around the partition. After all these years, this continues being a sore point of contention between two countries and owing to its popularity filmmakers continue milking this cow.
So, the next logical question is what movie am I talking about? And, does the plot of the movie revolve around partition. The answer to the first question is, Partition: 1947. Yes, that is the name of the movie. The answer to the second question can be derived from the first one but I’ll still make it clear, yes the movie’s plot is about partition. Now time for a little history. Not, the history of India but that of the movie
.
The movie that I’m talking about was 'Viceroy's House'. But, that was then and since they have changed the title of their film. The new title being 'Partition 1947'. The film is being directed by Gurinder Chadha. If you have seen the trailer of the film than it is quite evident that the film is a British-Indian historical drama. The star cast of the film includes stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, and Michael Gambon.
This film will be marking Huma Qureshi’s international debut. When asked about the movie the actress states that she has put her heart and soul into the movie. The trailers make the movie seem like a serious effort at telling the age-old tale of the India-Pakistan partition. The new poster for the film is out now and if I were to sum up my feeling about the movie, then I’d say that the film does come across as a very compelling watch.
Huma Qureshi will essaying the role of Aalia, who happens to be a Muslim woman and falls in love with a Hindu boy, Jeet (Manish) who also happens to be working at the Viceroy's House. With borders being redrawn they are forced to take different routes. Hugh will be essaying the role of Lord Mountbatten, the man who was charged with the task of handing over India back to Indians, and Huma will be essaying the role of his interpreter.
Partition:1947 is yet another tale of the partition but it seems like a fresh new take on the old and sensitive tragedy. Will it be any different though, that remains to be seen. Let’s go through all we know about the movie.
